Why should we take medicine

If we fall ill, it is important to turn to Allah Taala through the deeds which Rasulullah Sallallahu alaiyhi wa Sallam had prescribed. From the teachings of Quran and Hadith, our Pious Elders had stressed on Tawba-Istegfar, Sadaqa and worldly treatments. The third is also a Sunnah and proved by Hadith. Regarding worldly treatment, Ulama added that one should undergo medicine (or see a doctor) according to ones ability i.e. financial condition.
What should be the intention while seeing the doctor and/or taking medicine? To answer this, we relate a story from an illustrious pious, Hazratji Mawlana Yusuf Kandhalawi (R)’s noble life.
Once Hazratji Mawlana Yusuf (R) visited Khulna, Bangladesh. In a bayan there, he addressed for a long time. In most of the bayan he emphasized that Allah Taala is the Sole Doer of everything in the Universe. Right after the bayan, he got back to his room and he started taking various medicines. A buzurg of Bangladesh, Mawlana Abdul Fattah (R), who was there and witnessed this matter, very eagerly asked, “Hazratji! You had just stated in the bayan that Allah Taala is the Doer of all. Why do we then have medicine?” Hazratji (R) at once firmly answered: “This is Sunnah!”
Therefore, a Muslim should take medicine in the intention of performing a Sunnah. He should firmly believe that the doctor or a tablet can never cure me. He is Allah, my Lord, Whose Command works on every thing and being in the universe. Whenever we need to take medicine, our contemplation should be: My Nabi Sallallahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam would take medicine, therefore, I am taking medicine too, i.e. I am following my Beloved Prophet. A Muslim does not take medicine with the belief that the medicine will cure him. A medicine, like all other things, don’t hold any independent power in itself. It works if only Allah Taala desires.
A Muslim should not be oblivion of Allah’s Command at any moment of life. How quickly we turn to good deeds proves the strength of our Iman.

THE WORLD CUP 2010

By Hazrat Maulana Yunus Patel Saheb (DB)
The hype and talk presently is the World Cup 2010. Soccer-mania has gripped the mind, the heart, the
speech, the time and the money of many, many Muslims.
And these many, many Muslims argue : “It’s ONCE IN A LIFETIME…We are the HOST country … It’s
the World Cup which cannot be missed at any cost…”,
And we naively believe that these reasons give us the go-ahead to support, promote and participate.
But there is one serious fact which makes us unsuitable and incompatible for what I would describe as
an International “upsurge of sins” – and that reason is : We are Muslims. And we are very fortunate
that we are Muslims. As such, there is no compatibility between a Muslim and sin.
Let us discuss why we, as Muslims, cannot and should not align ourselves to the World Cup.
Let us read with an open heart and mind.
REASONS Why MUSLIMS should NOT ATTEND and
NOT SUPPORT the World Cup:
1.) SALAAH
It is a common observance, that many, many Muslims are totally neglectful of Salaah when it comes to
International, National or local sporting events. Even those who have some link with the Masaajid, will
choose to forego Salaah in Jamaat and even the Salaah itself, so as not to miss a moment in watching
men run after a ball.
Let us relate this to real life and the inevitable : How will this benefit us in this world and the
hereafter ? Will any one of these sports players be able to intercede on our behalf, before Allah Ta’ala,
when we have to account for our actions, for our indulgence in futile and even Haraam activities?
Our Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) said : “…Do not forgo Salaah intentionally, lest you should get
out of the fold of Islam. Do not perpetrate disobedience to Allah, lest you deserve His Wrath…”
Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) also said: “The dividing line between kufr and Imaan is Salaah.”
And : “A person who has missed one Salaah is like one who has lost all his family and wealth.”
Just as we would be grief-stricken at the loss of all of our beloved family members and the loss of all
of our wealth, properties, etc. similarly should we grieve over losing just ONE Salaah?
Those few who do perform Salaah at the stadium or grounds, whilst the shouting, screaming, music,
drink and other sins are being engaged in simultaneously, should think for themselves of what a display
of hypocrisy they make.
2.) WASTAGE AND EXTRAVAGANCE
2
Allah Ta’ala states explicitly : “…And do not squander recklessly. Surely, squanderers are brothers to
Shayateen, and Shaytaan is very ungrateful to his Lord.”
[Surah Bani Israeel 17 : 26/27]
Spending R800 or R1000, whether more or less, on one ticket – and we know many are spending
much, much more, on many tickets - is money wasted, and wastage and squandering are categorized as
sin in Islam – whether on that which is permissible or otherwise. Moreover, the sin is compounded
when it is being spent to view something which is at a place hosting a combination of evils.
Besides the tickets for the various matches, much more money will be spent on travel and
accommodation – with airfares and rates going through the roof.
Consider how many loaves of bread, how many litres of milk or necessities of life, could have been
provided for thousands that live below the bread line or thousands more that are in dire need of
medical assistance … How can we be so complacent when so many are without food, water, electricity,
medicine and other such needs ? Doesn’t our Imaan and conscience trouble us in the least ?
Moreover, wastage and extravagance are a cause of drought, high cost living and other forms of
punishment.
3.) MUSIC
Almost every venue, event and occasion today seems to demand “music” as part of the entertainment.
As Muslims, we know fully well, that music is not the “pleasure” of a true believer because Nabi
(Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) specifically mentioned that one of his objectives was to destroy musical
instruments.
Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) said : “My Rabb has commanded me to destroy all musical
instruments…” and also : “Music causes hypocrisy to grow in the heart just as water causes crops to
grow.”
According to another Hadith of Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam): ‘Music is from Shaytaan and
accommodating it in anyway is nifaaq (hypocrisy).’
Ibn Walih (RA) said : “Beware of music because music reduces shame, it increases lust and destroys
one’s dignity and respect. Its effect is like the effect of alcohol.”
Then, would it be morally correct for a MUSLIM to be present at such an event where Music is ‘a must
have’ ?
4.) ALCOHOL
The Ahadith make mention : “Wine is the gatherer of sin.”, “Wine is the route to indecency and is one
of the major sins.”
3
Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) also said : “….and do not take to drinking, for that is the mother
of all evils.”
Every person that is associated to alcohol – be it the manufacturer, the one who transports, the one
who sells, buys or serves comes under the curse of Allah Ta’ala. And those that keep company and
incline towards the transgressors have to contend with the same consequences, for Allah Ta’ala warns us
: “ Do not incline to the transgressors for then the fire will touch you.”
5.) ZINA (ADULTERY / FORNICATION)
Allah Ta’ala says : “AND COME NOT NEAR TO ZINA. VERILY IT IS A SHAMEFUL AND EVIL PATH”
[SURAH AL- ISRA 17 : 32]
It is a very evident fact that these events promote Zina in abundance. Besides adultery of the eyes which is also
categorized as zina (adultery) and which is very common at these types of venues with the indecent and revealing
attire, there is actual zina that is being promoted and advertised. With the thousands of prostitutes that are visiting
our country and the thousands more that are local – what else can be expected, except an escalation in adultery
and fornication and a much higher risk of very severe punishment descending... (May Allah Ta’ala protect us from
His punishment)
The summary and outline of Ahadith, is that plague, poverty, diseases which were unheard of previously,
earthquakes, drought and destruction, birth of illegitimate children, and even escalation of deaths will
follow in the wake of adultery and immorality.
If a person commits adultery, then the priceless and invaluable commodity of Imaan leaves his body. Hazrat Anas
(RA) narrated that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) said : “Imaan is a garb with which Allah clothes
whomsoever He wishes. If a person commits adultery, this garb is snatched away and if he repents, it is again
returned.”
Then what will be the condition of the person who dies whilst committing zina ?
6.) HERO-WORSHIPPING
Allah Ta’ala has mentioned in the Qur`aan Sharief, in Surah Munafiqoon: “BUT HONOUR BELONGS TO ALLAH,
HIS MESSENGER AND THE BELIEVERS...”
And in Surah An-Nisaa : ‘…TO THOSE WHO TAKE FOR FRIENDS UNBELIEVERS RATHER THAN BELIEVERS : IS IT HONOUR
THEY SEEK AMONG THEM ? NAY, - ALL HONOUR IS WITH ALLAH.’
To deal honestly and truthfully with disbelievers or to assist the poor and needy amongst them, are
from the teachings of Islam. However, to integrate with them in such a manner, that we lose our
Islamic identity or give up on our Islamic culture is prohibited because it is inevitably extremely
harmful to one’s Imaan. Many have given up Imaan and Islam due to very close friendship and
relationship with those who do not believe in Allah Ta’ala, His Final Messenger (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-
Sallam) and the Day of Judgement.
4
…So we find people going crazy and wild over soccer players, cricket players and their likes. And one
wonders, what is all the clamour and fuss about ?... when their “outstanding” achievement in life seems
to be, kicking, throwing or hitting a ball…? Does this call for hero-worship? Is this our SHALLOW
understanding of success as Muslims?
Do we not know that the most successful of all people are the Ambiyaa (Prophets) and their followers ?
Are we even aware of the tremendous successes of the Sahabah ? They were MEN. And Brave Men. Their
history, their feats, their conquests drown out the thousands of insignificant goals scored by soccer
players.
We should reflect over our obsession, veneration and craze of film-stars, sport-stars and others who are
presently the enemies of Allah Ta’ala. …A warning has been sounded, directing us to make sincere
taubah.
Allah Ta’ala states in the Qur`aan Sharief : ‘O PEOPLE OF IMAAN! DO NOT TAKE MY ENEMIES AND YOUR ENEMIES AS
FRIENDS, INCLINING TOWARDS THEM WITH LOVE. VERILY, THEY HAVE REJECTED THE TRUTH WHICH HAS COME TO YOU (FROM
YOUR RABB)…’
[SURAH MUMTAHINA 60 : 1]
We seem to forget that we are Muslims and all Muslims have dangerous enemies: So whilst our enemies
shrewdly convince us to spend thousands of Rands, waste our energy and time on useless, futile sports
such as the World Cup, they gleefully bomb, kill, rape, oppress and harass our brothers and sisters in
other parts of the world … but we are so intoxicated with World Cups that we don’t even know our
enemies have deceived us.
Have we not witnessed enough enmity in Occupied Palestine, in Pakistan, Kashmir, Kosovo, Iraq,
Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia and other parts of the world? Those who were considered friends and
companions were the first to assault, kill, maim and even rape our Muslim brothers and sisters, for no
other reason than that they are Believers in Allah Ta’ala. …Have we not taken any lesson ? Have we
not witnessed blood of the Muslims flowing in Bosnia, like rivers ?
When we claim to have love for Allah Ta’ala, how then can we love these types of sporting events ?
Allah Ta’ala advises us : “O YOU WHO BELIEVE! TAKE NOT FOR FRIENDS UNBELIEVERS RATHER THAN BELIEVERS : DO
YOU WISH TO OFFER ALLAH AND OPEN PROOF AGAINST YOURSELVES?” …In other words, we should not make them
bosom pals. Once again, it does not mean that we should not treat them with kindness, deal honestly
and assist when there is need. …However : Will participation and support in the World Cup attract
them towards Islam ?
7.) DRESS
5
Islam has gifted us with a dress code, which identifies us as Muslims – which makes us flag-bearers of
Islam, representatives of Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam), Inviters to Islam. We have been expressly
forbidden from adopting any semblance with the cultural or religious dressing style of people of other
faiths..
By wearing soccer t-shirts, caps, bags with the 2010 football logos clearly indicates our love for the
event and the culture. Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) said: “The one who imitates others is not of
us.” And: “Whoever imitates a nation is of them.”
We are the nation of Islam, and should be rightly proud of our beautiful culture and dress because it
is the culture and dress of the greatest after Allah, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam). …Is it
not the height of foolishness to exchange diamonds for stones ?
8.) MIXED GATHERINGS
The disbelievers have no concept of segregation. They advocate mixed gatherings because it facilitates
more sins and immorality. It works in their favour because there is easy gratification of sensual desires
and sinful pleasures.
The Shariah instructs us : ‘IT IS NOT PERMISSIBLE TO BE PRESENT IN A GATHERING WHERE ALLAH TA’ALA IS BEING
DISOBEYED.’
THE PURPOSE OF CREATION & OBJECTIVE OF LIFE
“We created not the heavens, the earth and all between them, merely in (idle) sport.”
[Surah Dukhaan :38]
“Do you then think that We created you in jest and that you would not be brought back to Us
(for an account)?”
[Surah Mu`minoon 23 :115]
Our purpose in this world is definitely not play and amusement. Moreover, deliberate and planned sins
do not feature in a Muslim’s life.
Allah Ta’ala and His Rasul (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) certainly do not want to deprive us of
enjoyment and entertainment. The Shariah and the Sunnah accommodate and give guidance for a
Muslim with regards to Halaal, permissible entertainment, humuor, laughter, play and relaxation.
However there is certainly no scope for events which feature Haraam indulgences.
The reality of the “World Cup” is that it is a dangerous fusion of major sins.
And when sins increase and multiply then we invite a punishment in proportion to that disobedience.
…Haven’t we taken lesson from Tsunamis, Gale-force winds, Hurricanes and Earthquakes that left
nothing but devastation in their wake ? Are we immune to such disaster? Are we safe from punishment?
Let us ponder the words of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) who said :
6
‘[ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT], THE FEET OF A PERSON WILL NOT MOVE UNTIL HE IS ASKED REGARDING :
(1) HIS LIFE; HOW DID HE SPEND IT,
(2) HIS KNOWLEDGE; HOW DID HE ACT UPON IT,
(3) HIS WEALTH; HOW DID HE ACQUIRE IT (AND)
(4) HOW DID HE SPEND IT, AND
(5) HIS BODY, HOW DID HE USE IT.’
It is reported that once Amr Ibn Absa (RA) asked Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) which Hijrat (migration) is the
best and he said: “That you leave what your Lord dislikes.”
One of our great Scholars had said very aptly :
“It baffles me to see a people who are advised to get their provision and are called upon that the departure time
is due yet they sit down playing.”
Our boarding passes were given to us the moment we entered this world … and that boarding pass is for
boarding the flight of death. We have been informed and advised of the long journey ahead and the much needed
provision for such a journey – but how strange, that we choose to while a way our time and we accumulate
nothing for what lies ahead.
It is said : “The knife is being sharpened, and the oven is being heated up, yet the ram is still eating the fodder.”
The knife of death has been sharpened, our graves have been selected and are waiting for us to take residence in
them. …Despite knowing this, we “graze” complacently in disobedience – unconcerned that that knife is ready to
strike us at anytime.
Allah Ta’ala states :
“O PEOPLE OF IMAAN! SAVE YOURSELVES AND YOUR FAMILIES FROM A FIRE WHOSE FUEL IS MEN AND STONES…”
[SURAH AT-TAHREEM 66 : 6]
“YOUR (REAL) FRIENDS ARE (NO LESS THAN) ALLAH, HIS APOSTLE, AND THE (FELLOWSHIP OF) BELIEVERS, - THOSE WHO
ESTABLISH REGULAR PRAYERS, AND REGULAR CHARITY, AND THEY BOW DOWN HUMBLY (IN WORSHIP).
AS FOR THOSE WHO TURN (FOR FRIENDSHIP) TO ALLAH, HIS RASUL AND THE (FELLOWSHIP OF) BELIEVERS – IT IS THE
FELLOWSHIP OF ALLAH THAT MUST CERTAINLY TRIUMPH.”
[SURAH MAA`IDAH 5 : 58/ 59]
Of course, all that has been stated will not go down well with everyone. It is for those who want to be
good ambassadors of Islam, pleasing to Allah Ta’ala and His Beloved Rasul (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam).
This article is for my own reflection and an invitation to my Muslim brothers and sisters to reflect with
an open mind. I make dua that Allah Ta’ala protect me and the Ummah from all fitna.

Rabi’ ibne Khusaiym (R)

Whenever his mother would get up from sleep in the middle of the night, she never found boy Rabi’ on the bed. She would get him on the prayer mat. Some times she would see that her son is extending hands, supplicating and sobbing to Allah. Some times she would see that he is completely absorbed in Salat. His mother would call him, “O Dear! Don’t you need some sleep too?” Boy Rabi’ would reply, “He, who has the fear of enemy, could he sleep when the darkness befalls?”
Listening to such words the mother would shed tears and she would pray heartily for her son.
Later when Rabi’ ibne Khusaiym (R) grew up to a young man, so did his Taqwa…When people went to bed at night, Rabi’ (R)’s prayers and tears made his mother unrest. When this continued for long, Rabi’ (R)’s mother once said to her son, “Do tell me dear son! What has happened to you? Had you murdered someone?” Rabi’ (R) replied, “Yes mother! I had slain a life.” The mother said, “Do tell me who that person is(?) If his relatives learn how you undergo hardship at night they would surely be kind to you!” Hearing this, Rabi’ (R) said, “That isn’t necessary because I had killed my own soul. I killed it with the weapon of sin.” (This was definitely his piety!)
This Tabeyee, Rabi’ ibne Khusaiym (R) was a favorite student of Sahabi Hazrat Abdullah ibne Mas’ud (RA). Hazrat Abdullah ibne Mas’ud (RA) used to say to Rabi’ (R), “O Abu Yazid! If Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam saw you, he would surely love you very much.” Abdullah ibne Ma’sud (RA) also added, “Every time I see you, I remember the polite and sincere ones!”
When the final moments of Rabi’ ibne Khusaiym (R) drew near, his daughter was sobbing beside him. He consoled his daughter, “O Dear! Why do you cry? Goodness has come to your father!”

Tasabbuh Bil Kuffaar

Under mentioned are a few verses of the Holy Qur'an and Ahaadith pertaining to
the subject matter: 'Do not incline to the transgressors for then the Fire will touch you.' (Surah Hood 113)
The above ayah sufficiently warns Muslims not to adopt or imitate the culture and customs of the non-Muslims. Shaytaan said, '...I will teach them to ruin the
appearance made by Allah....'(Surah Nisaa 119) Appearance by virtue of customs is subjected to change with the times and attitudes of people, but this is not so in the Shari'ah.
Shaytaan will always be on the `backs' of people to renovate their thinking to `live with the times'.
Hadhrat Ibn Umar (Radhiyallaahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said,
`Whoever imitates a nation (in its ways and culture) becomes one of them.' (Abu Dawood) By adopting even the appearance of the non-Muslims that in itself is association with them and is therefore sinful. Hadhrat Abu Raihaanah
(Radhiyallaahu Anhu) narrates that once Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) prohibited ten things. Among these ten things prohibited was to line garments with silk in the style of the non-Muslims (of that time). (Abu
Dawood, Nisaai) Hadhrat Hajjaj Bin Hassaan (Radhiyallaahu Anhu) narrates: "We went to meet Hadhrat Anas (Radhiyallaahu Anhu) (a prominent
Sahabi; on this occasion Hajjaj was a little boy). My sister Mugheera told me that at that time I was a little kid and I had two plaits on my head.
Hadhrat Anas (Radhiyallaahu Anhu) rubbed his hand over my head, made Dua for barakah and said: 'Cut off these plaits because this is the style of the Jews.' (Abu Dawood) Hadhrat Aamir Bin Sa'd (Radhiyallaahu Anhu) narrating from his
father says that Rasulullah said: "Maintain clean the area in front of your houses and do not imitate the Jews."(Tirmizi) Hadhrat Ali (Radhiyallaahu Anhu) narrates that once Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) had an Arabian crossbow in his hand. On this occasion Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) saw a crossbow of Persian origin in the hands of a Muslim. Rasulullah
(Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) commented: "Throw it (the Persian bow) away and take one like this (Arabian bow)..."(Ibn Majah) Hadhrat Huzaifah
(Radhiyallaahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: "Recite the Qur'an in Arabic style and tone (i.e. correct and with simplicity) and refrain from the style and tone of the People of the Book (Jews and
Christians...)" (Baihaqi) Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) went to great lengths disapproving the imitation of non-Muslims even in the recitation of the Noble Qur'an as mentioned in the last Hadith (above). Hence nations that do not
follow the Shari'ah should not be imitated.
Therefore any act, be it the celebration of a particular community that may or may not necessary be religious, but merely associated to their "way of rejoicing" falls under the same banner - imitating the non-Muslims

Taqleed

Mufti Musa Badat Saheb
Some unacquainted people regard Taqleed as apostasy and they spread an atmosphere of malice and controversy amongst the Muslims and especially in the youngsters. Some Non Muqallid go as far as writing about it as polytheism. Hence, after one of our Deeni brothers read it out from a book in English and drew our attention towards it, a desire grew in my heart to make our youngsters aware of the significance of Taqleed in the Shari'ah. So that they do not become a prey to misunderstanding, divergence and confusion and so that they do not have a misconception regarding our Imams, that they had adopted a path which was detached from the Qur'aan and Ahadeeth. When in reality, after understanding the objective and the meaning of the Qur'aan and Sunnah, they simplified it into the form of Fiqha and Masaa'il and then they offered it to the Ummah, which is in actual fact obeying the Qur'aan and Sunnah. For this reason, the Ummah owes a debt of gratitude to them, (May Allah reward them with the best of all rewards).
QUESTION
Why is it important to do Taqleed of only one Imam? What harm is there in following one Imam for one Mas'alah, then another Imam for some other Mas'alah, the way it was in the time of the Sahabah and the Tabi'een, They were not dependent on one individual in following the whole Madhab?
ANSWER
In the time of the Sahabah, virtue and prosperity had the upper hand and generally there was no part in deen for fulfilling personal desires. That is why when someone inquired about a Mas‟alah, he asked with a good intention and he would act upon it as well, regardless of whether he liked it or not.
In later times, this was not the case. Instead, people started having the urge to ask one Mas'alah from a certain Alim and if the answer was against their desires, they would walk off to another Alim in search of ease. Still not content with this, they were stricken with a growing concern about how they could find a way out in every Mas‟alah which would satisfy them. It is apparent that this can not be the motive for the search of truth.
Sometimes this can cause a lot of damage. For example, a person made wudhu then touched his wife. Somebody following the Madhab of Imam Shafi'ee (Rahmatullahi Alayh) said to him "Repeat your wudhu because touching your wife breaks the Wudhu." He replies, "I do Taqleed of Imam Abu Hanifa (Rahmatullahi Alayh) and wudhu does not break in his opinion of this situation." Then this person vomits. Somebody following the Madhab of Imam Abu Hanifa (Rahmatullahi Alayh) says to him, 'Repeat your wudhu because vomit breaks the wudhu in the opinion of Imam Abu Hanifa (Rahmatullahi alaihe)." He replies, "I am following the Madhab of Imam Shafi'ee (Rahmatullahi alaihe) and in his view, wudhu does not break by vomiting." Now, this persons Salaah is not valid in accordance with the Madhab of Imam Abu Hanifa (Rahmatullahi alaihe) or Imam Shafi'ee (Rahmatullahi alaihe) This is known as Talfeeq which is void and not permissible, by unanimous decision.
Following in this manner is in actual fact doing Taqleed of neither of the Imams. Instead it is fulfilling personal desires, which is forbidden in the Shari'ah. It leads a person astray and away from the path of Allah. Allah says in the Qur'aan, „And do not follow your personal desires, for they will lead you astray from the path of Allah.'(Bayanul-Qur’aan)
This is why it is important to do Taqleed of only one Imaam. The Qur'aan has associated obedience with repentance, „And follow the path of he who turns towards me,' (Bayanul-Qur’aan) On this basis, any individual who had strong presumption about Imam Abu Hanifa (Rahmatullahi Alayh), that he was repentant, correct and that his Ijtihad was in accordance with the Qur'aan and Ahadeeth, he chose to do his Taqleed. Anybody who had the same thought regarding Imam Shafi'ee (Rahmatullahi Alayh), Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alayh) or about Imam Ahmad (Rahmatullahi Alayh), he started doing his Taqleed. Now, this is incorrect to leave one's own Imam whenever a person feels and start following a different Madhab, because without permission of the Shari'ah it becomes Talfeeq and fulfilment of personal desires. In result of which a person is lead astray.
Hence, Maulana Mohammad Hussain Sahib has written in his compilation Ishaa'atus-Sunnah Vol 11 No.2 pg.53. After opposing Taqleed for a very long period of time and then becoming affected with bitter experience for not doing Taqleed, he writes, "We found out from 25 years of experience that those people who abstain from entire Mujtahids and Taqleed, they end up saying farewell to Islam. Some become Christians whilst others end up without any Madhab at all. Rebellion and disobedience of the Shari 'ah is a petty result of this freedom."(Sabeelur-Rashaad pg.12)
This is why those learned Ulama who have deep insight of the Qur'aan and countless treasures of the traditions of the Prophet and the Sahabah, in front of their eyes. Whose hearts are enriched with the fear of Allah and whose lives are enlightened with the lamp of the Sunnah of the Prophet , still choose to do Taqleed, despite having these qualities and virtues.
It would not be an exaggeration if it was said that these Ulama reached such a status only through following the Prophet and doing Taqleed of the pious servants of Deen and the great Mujtahideen.

The Effects of Secular Education

The Effects of True Ilm

It is furthermore evident from this that Ilm is only that by virtue of which one becomes a cultured human being, the heart becomes lustrous and purified, darkness and corruptness are effaced and Nooraaniyyat [lightness and holiness] settle in [the heart].

The effects of that will manifest themselves in the form of beautiful character and wholesome actions leading to peace, serenity, safety and tranquility becoming widespread in the world. People will not face an iota of harm, terror, mischief and trouble from such a person. Everyone will be comforted by him. No-one will face danger from him. Everyone will be at ease with him and will have trust in him. People will receive peace, ease, comfort and rest from him.

The Effects of Secular Education

Now look at secular education and worldly sciences and their institutions and centres. Do we find teachings of this nature? Look, and look carefully! Look over and over again! Make a thorough inspection. Leave alone education of these things you will never even find the slightest attention and concern for it.

In fact, you will find the opposite. You will find engrossment and indulgence in such things; such fervour and frenzy which drive those who pursue such education and sciences to attain heterogenous carnal desires, self-honour, status, power, glamour, comfort, wealth, luxury, pleasure, name, fame, following, service, learning ways and schemes to make others subservient and servants, authority and rule over others, etc. You will find them engrossed in these thoughts and dreams day and night, morning and evening, whilst sleeping and whilst awake.

Now, it is clear, and abundantly clear that besides egotism, self-interests, sensual pleasures, selfishness and insensitivity, crime and anarchy instead of sympathy, troubling and harming instead of peace and safety, instead of providing comfort and besides ruin and destruction what else will be achieved?

It is for this reason that as this kind of education and sciences [secular] expands, as such institutions increase and classes of society turn in more and more numbers to it [secular education], the more crime, anarchy and every sort of danger are accelerated to the extent that thinkers, intellectuals and governments are helpless and powerless to curb its high tide stemming from being nurtured in all these colleges and universities.

Leaving the portals of those institutions, becoming posted to some office and gaining some sort of authority leaves them with access to pleasures, money, glory and beauty which they zealously and ambitiously pursue. They loudly pronounce their invincibility and authority. In this case there is no question of them having any regard for the responsibilities on their shoulders and sparing any thought for the problems and difficulties encountered by the general public and creation. They have nothing to do with their [creation’s] sufferings and coming to their rescue and aid.

They are perennially engaged in acquiring the latest for themselves and at most for those close to them. They think only about themselves and their close ones. In this state of affairs it is obvious that in acquiring, securing and fulfilling their goals and ambitions they will never look at the sufferings or comfort of others. They will be totally indifferent to that. They won’t have time for others no matter what; be there crime, anarchy, rising cost of living, ill-treatment, injustices and oppression. [The vivid picture painted here by Hazrat Moulana Maseehullah Saheb (Quddisa Sirruhu) is witnessed on a daily basis, with governments at the forefront of this horrible culture of bestiality nurtured and promoted by western education. May Allah Ta'ala protect us.]

They have absolutely no concern for that. Even if they render some meager service then it is either due to some fleeting exigency or personal benefit of blocking of criticism and objection, or through bribe-taking, hoarding money is their idea. Besides accumulation of wealth and glory they perhaps cannot care in the least for others—for the oppressed and for the distressed— save a few.

What is the reason for this ruin and rot nowadays? For no reason other than being trained from the age of discretion in bestial, material and sensual objectives and goals. No one showed them even a sign of cultured human behaviour. Whence will they then gain lofty human attributes and traits? How will they then become proper human beings? How are they then going to inculcate lofty character, righteous deeds, sterling ways and admirable practices?

And how are the dark tides of injustice and oppression going to be stemmed? How will peace, order, safety and tranquility settle in the land and on earth? How is salvation from local and global problems and disturbances going to be attained?

Indeed when this trend of uncontrollable bestiality, barbarity and satanity and gross human rights abuses, injustice, usurpation of rights, vices and ignorance become widespread then this world will be a spectacle of Hell. Life here will be pervaded with much anxiety, misery and profound bitterness.

So the clamour nowadays for western education and culture and the spread of secular knowledge and culture to apparently every big and small, major and minor town, village, settlement, city and all classes of the social strata—close to every person male and female, is pursing and obtaining this education and culture—yet the lofty goals and standards of proper human behaviour mentioned earlier are not realized is manifest proof of this [western] culture and [secular] education being mere hollow terms bearing no substance and essence. In fact, it does not come remotely close to real education and culture. They [secular and western educated modernists] have not even dreamt of true education and culture.

Thus, the one and only conclusion we come to is that the education and courses imparted in these colleges and universities are human concoctions of progress in self-interests, perfection in self-aggrandizement and pecuniary carnal desires and incitement to haughtiness and proudfulness. For this filling one’s belly, pampering one’s body, adorning one’s body and name, fame and acclaim are key requisites which are fountainheads of violation of human rights due to which infliction of harm, etc instead of provision of aid is inescapable. Therefore, instead of peace, crime and corruption are the order of the day as a result of these colleges, universities and this ‘education’. These are the effects and fruits of this concocted ‘education’.

Mufti Mahmood ul Hasan Gangohi (Rahmatullaahi ‘alayhi)

LIFE SKETCH:
Mufti Mahmood ul Hasan Gangohi (rah) was the senior most khalifa of Hadrat Shaykh ul Hadith Maulana Zakariyyah Kandhalwi (rah). In addition he was the Head Mufti at Dar ul Uloom Deoband and Mazaahir ul Uloom for many years. Along with the responsibilites of Ifta (Fatwa writing) he taught the 2nd Volume of Sahih Bukhari at Dar ul Uloom Deoband, supervised the running of numerous madaris in India and also compiled Fataawa Mahmoodiyah, a copious reference book on Hanafi Fiqh rulings. A man of extreme piety and learning, he was not only a Faqih and a Sufi but also a Zaahid (ascetic). Every month not only would he return his salary to Dar ul Uloom Deoband, but also add something from his own pocket also.

BAYAT WITH SHAYKH UL HADITH MAULANA ZAKARIYYAH KANDHALWI (RAH):

Mufti Sahib gave bayat in 1349 A.H. to Shaykh ul Hadith Maulana Zakariyyah Kandhalwi (rah) while he was at Deoband. When he used to sit in the majlis of Hadrat Raipuri (rah) and Hadarat Dehlawi (rah), he used to become very inclined toward the Hereafter. However when Mufti Sahib (rah) used to sit in the majlis of Shaykh ul Hadith (rah), Mufti Sahib (rah) would be so affected, that his own sins and flaws would become manifest to him, as a result of which Mufti Sahib (rah) came to the conclusion that his Islaah (spiritual reformation) would take place only at the hands of Shaykh ul Hadith (rah). This was the first reason of Mufti Sahib (rah) in giving preference to Shaykh ul Hadith (rah) for bayat.

The second reason was that in terms of age, the youngest of the saints was Shaykh ul Hadith Maulana Zakariyyah Kandhalwi (rah). Mufti Sahib (rah) wanted to be in the khidmat and suhbat of his Shaykh for a long time. When he approached Shaykh ul Hadith Maulana Zakariyyah Kandhalwi (rah) he was told to give bayat to Shaykh Husayn Madani (rah). Mufti Sahib (rah) replied that "Hadrat, I have heard that if one gives bayat to the Shaykh he is inclined towards it results in a better focus and reformation for the disciple". For some months, Shaykh ul Hadith Maulana Zakariyyah Kandhalwi (rah) did not give bayat. Finally, he said if you are not inclined towards Hadrat Madani (rah) then do istikhaarah, if nothing becomes clear in istikhaarah, then travel to three places: Raipur, Nizamuddin, and Thanhbawan, sit in the majalis and dont say anything." Mufti Sahib (db) didnt go, so Shaykh ul Hadith then gave him bayat.

KHILAAFAT FROM SHAYKH UL HADITH (RAH):

In Gangoh there was a woman who had bayat with a Shaykh, when Mufti Sahib (rah) traveled to Gangoh, she came to him and said that "My Shaykh has passed away, please allow me to give bayat to you". Mufti Sahib (db) was quite surprised by this. While he and Shaykh ul Hadith (rah) were going to visit Maulana Thanvi (rah), Mufti Sahib (rah) narrated the incident, but had yet to finish when Shaykh ul Hadith (rah) said: "If she wants to give bayat to you, accept it". Mufti Sahib (rah) replied "Hadrat, How can I make someone my disciple?, My intention was that if there is a day when Hadrat Madani (rah) can visit here, so I can inform the woman, that he is coming and she can give bayat to him." Hadrat Shaykh ul Hadith (rah) replied: "Dont be shy...if you need to consult with me, just ask, this is my ijaazat (permission)".

Mufti Sahib (rah) did not take this to be an explicit ijaazat from Shaykh ul Hadith (rah) and went to Kanpur. Then Shaykh ul Hadith (rah) wrote him a letter stating: "I have no news if anyone has made bayat to you or not, if somebody wants to give bayat then give it to him". Mufti Sahib (rah) repied: "Hadrat, some people wanted to give bayat to me, however I advised them to approach other scholars. When somebody insisted repeatedly, then I told them 'I dont have ijaazat (permission) to give bayat'. Hadrat Shaykh (rah) replied: "Perhaps you dont remember that when we were going to visit Hadrat Thanvi (rah), I gave you ijaazat at that time, and any doubts you had I cleared them also". He wrote also "One should give advice to people to give bayat to someone else but when others insist then there is no harm in acceding to their request".

MUFTI MAHMOOD (RAH) IN THE VIEW OF DAR UL ULOOM DEOBAND:

"Mufti Sahib received khilafat and 'permission' from Hadhrat Shaikhul Hadith Maulana Muhammad Zakariya. His residence was always resonant with the 'remembrance' (zikr) of the 'remembrancers' (zakirin). He was very unassuming and hospitable; a man of vast reading, a regular 'rememberer of Allah' (Dhaakir), an 'occupied' (shaghil), large-hearted and generous august man. One is reminded of the ancient Ulema on seeing him. An important peculiarity of his is also this that whatever salary he received from Darul Uloom, he not only returned it to the Darul Uloom every month but also added something to it from his own pocket." (Extracted from Introduction to the Ulema of Deoband)

DEATH:

Mufti Mahmood-ul-Hasan (rah) passed away on the 19th of Rabiul Akhir, 1417 A.H. (Sept. 2, 1996). He was laid to rest in the Elsburg Cemetery near Johannesburg, South Africa.

NISBAT MA'ALLAH

Nisbat literally means relationship or connection. A nisbat or connection is a two-way process. It has two ends. In our context Nisbat Ma'Allah (Relationship with Allah) means Allah's connection with the bandah (servant) and the bandah's connection with Allah Ta'ala.
The attainment of Nisbat Ma'Allah is also referred to as Husool il'Allah (Attained towards Allah). The relationship of Allah with the bandah is Allah's Pleasure with His servant. The relationship of the bandah with Allah means constancy of the servant in taa'at (obedience) and involvement in abundant Zikr with perfect consciousness.
The sign of the existence of the bandah's relationship with Allah is his restlessness for engagement in obedience and Ibaadat as well as total abhorrence for all forms-- both Zaahir and Baatin-- of sin and disobedience. In addition to this is the bandah's continuous striving to follow the Sunnah.

A Word of Advice to Secular School Students

By Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (r.a)
For Allâh's sake, take more pity than this on your children. The storm of atheism has engulfed the present generation. One has to be very careful. Ensure that you prevent your children from joining bad company and seek pious company for them.
You are probably under the impression that it is rather difficult to compel them to leave secular education and pursue Islamic education. I do accept your position. So let us do away with that as well. Allow them to study at school but please do accept a single request of mine. Instead of your children loitering about during the school holidays, send them to the Ahlullah (saints of Allâh) during the school holidays at least.
However, if you remonstrate that you won't have any time left with your children if they attend school during the year and pursue the company of the pious during the holidays, I have a solution to that problem as well. Analyse the duration of the holidays and keep them with you for a greater part of the holiday and send them to the Ahlullah for a few days only. This advice was in favour of the children.
Now there remains a group towards which people pay no attention whatsoever, neither in regards to their education nor to their spiritual enhancement. People pay attention to their children albeit in an ungraceful way but they pay no attention to this group at all. And this group is the group of women. There is an urgent need to (spiritually) reform them. If they are in order, the children will also turn out to be pious because the very first years of a child's life is spent in their company. This (spiritual) reformation can be achieved either by teaching them or by reading to them books dealing with jurisprudence and stories of the pious. Whether she listens or not, don't let it bother you. Sit at home and recite these books aloud. Continue doing this and Insha-Allâh it will have a fruitful effect on her. However, don't purchase the books without consulting the Ulama. Request them to make a selection of good books. In short, this is a method of (spiritual) reformation which doesn't entail much physical exertion nor will it affect one's worldly activities.

Dua for the Masjid / Maktab

“If we make dua for the Masjid / Maktab we will receive the reward of all the activities that take place in that Masjid / Maktab.  Making dua does not cost anything and will only take a few minutes.  One should say “Oh Allah grant progress to this Masjid / Madrasah, Oh Allah pay off the debt of this Masjid / Madrasah” etc.”

Gifts from Allah

Divine Mercy from Darood
Alhamdulillah, due to the blessing that comes from our reciting darood (salutations upon Rasoolullah ) we have been given the will to perform Allah’s dhikr. Allah’s personal manifestation descends upon Mustafa and on that place where Mustafa is present. The Divine manifestations accompany Rasoolullah : Rasoolullah is in Madinah and due to his presence Madinah is above all other places, Madinah is nothing without Allah’s Messenger . When Rasoolullah was in Quba, Quba was best, but when he left Quba for another place, then that place becomes the best. Thus it becomes clear that superiority is not due to the residence, but to the resident.
